Container weight must be proven from 2016
From summer 2016 for loaded containers that are transported by sea, weight must be proven.
This regulation was approved on Monday (May 19) of the Safety Committee MSC International Maritime Organisation Imo.
Probably in November, the rule is to be adopted and wull then be part of the Convention on maritime safety, Solas.
The reason for this step it is, that false or non-existent weights of containers, represented a growing threat to ships, crews, dock workers and transport service partners.
Moreover inaccurate weights caused problems at customs.
In the future, the weight of each loaded container must be determined by weighing the container before shipment and notified by the shipper to the terminal or the shipping company.
This information is then part of the ship's papers.
